Matthew W. Tierney is a seasoned litigator and founding member of Tierney & Smiley, LLC, before merging with HSAGN&P in Spring of 2026 and has nearly three decades of experience representing employers throughout Louisiana. His practice is primarily focused on workers’ compensation defense, employer liability, and protecting employers’ rights, where he is recognized for his strategic advocacy, extensive courtroom experience, and deep understanding of Louisiana employment and workers’ compensation law.
Matt earned his Bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs with a concentration in Public Policy from Indiana University in 1995 before obtaining his Juris Doctor from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1998. He was admitted to the Louisiana Bar that same year and is admitted to practice before all Louisiana state courts, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Throughout his career, Matt has successfully represented employers in workers’ compensation matters across Louisiana, trying cases in every workers’ compensation district in the state. His experience extends beyond the trial level, having appeared before multiple Louisiana Courts of Appeal and argued cases before the Louisiana Supreme Court.
In addition to his litigation practice, Matt is a respected educator and frequent speaker on workers’ compensation law. He has presented numerous seminars, continuing legal education programs, and industry training sessions covering all aspects of Louisiana workers’ compensation, helping employers, claims professionals, and fellow attorneys stay informed on developments in the field.
Matt is an active member of the Louisiana Association of Self Insured Employers and the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry. His professional excellence has been recognized with the prestigious AV Preeminent® rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest peer-review rating awarded for legal ability and ethical standards.

Outside the office, Matt is known for his competitive spirit. Among his many accomplishments, he has bowled a sanctioned perfect 300 game through the United States Bowling Congress—a distinction achieved by only a select group of bowlers.
